A Charming City Wedding Infused with Old Shanghai Glamour
Our wedding ceremony and dinner was held in Shanghai, China at the Fairmont Peace Hotel. Our Welcome Party, which was held on the previous day, was held at the exclusive members only Kee Club. There were drinks followed by speeches and then dancing! On Saturday, the day ceremony was at the Peace Hotel rooftop. The fact that it was super polluted and hazy the day before and the day AFTER the wedding was unreal. We were so fortunate to be able to have such a beautifully sunny and clear Spring day during our wedding (with no rain!) and that to me was just so memorable because living in Shanghai, you just never know.
We had the tea ceremony with family at the Sassoon Suite. So all in all, it was such a rollercoaster of emotions from happiness, to tiredness from having to take countless photos, to hunger (for not being able to eat enough), and then back to being super happy. We wanted to give our guests a glimpse of Old Shanghai glamour mixed with European elements. The theme slowly evolved into a chinoiserie themed wedding. It was followed by the dinner banquet at the Peace Hall. Honestly, it’s a really strange feeling to have so much attention on you. Also considering almost every person at the wedding flew in, it felt like a reunion and gathering with old friends and family.
We stuck with blue and white and pink for the cherry blossoms we had surrounding the room and on each table. We spent the longest trying to find a venue for the wedding, and only a few months to really get into the detail of everything little thing. In total, wedding planning took about 8 months. The after-party bus brought guests to the after-party. I have quite a few favourite photos, the ones of us overlooking the Bund during our day ceremony, but one that stood out for us was outside the Peace Hotel when we were crossing the road towards the Afterparty bus. The after party was at Unico. One particular moment where we felt we could finally be ourselves again, was at the afterparty where we could finally just not have to upkeep to a schedule and just party. That was the time we could actually hang out with our friends and loved ones as well, and actually talk and have conversations with everyone freely. The after-after party was at the Sassoon Suite.
Advice for brides-to-be
The mic screwed up during our vows, and all I could think about was can everyone hear us? My husband, Gordon leaned over to our solemniser and good friend, Vikram’s collar where his mic was attached and just winged it. It was only the start of the wedding event, but it told me that things will not go as plan, and you’ve just got to go with it. I tried not to have expectations anymore after that.
